Dog Treats http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/dog-treats/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/dog-treats/#comments Mon, 08 Apr 2013 14:07:16 +0000 Gina http://gracenfriends.com/?p=714 We went to finalize Prim’s adoption Saturday and stopped at the new Dairy Queen next door on the way out.  Because they built near a Petsmart, this Dairy Queen offers dog treats if they see a dog in the car.  I don’t normally give the dogs treats, because Midget has put on too much weight courtesy of daily treats, nor do I allow eating in my car, but it was a special occasion and I figured I could vacuum the seats when we got home.  In less than 24 hours, I paid for that mistake.  Prim woke me at 1:30 am to go outside.  Millie, who never has to go outside during the night, woke me at 5:30.  Millie also rarely has accidents in the house, but when we got home from church, I had a mess to clean.  With four little dogs in the house, it’s not always possible to tell who’s the guilty party, but Millie’s the only one who can jump the gate and get in the back of the house.  When I was cleaning up, I told her she should stay on the other side of the gate if she doesn’t want to tell on herself.  Midget had to get out as soon as we got home from church and a few hours later I barely got Prim outside in time.  When the three dogs who had treats were having issues and the two that didn’t were not, it wasn’t hard to put it all together.  As nice as it is for people to offer treats, the answer from now on will have to be no.

She’s a keeper. http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/shes-a-keeper/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/shes-a-keeper/#comments Fri, 05 Apr 2013 16:21:36 +0000 Gina http://gracenfriends.com/?p=706 I’m going to have to stop fostering for a little while, so I can housebreak my lastest foster failure.  It was pretty clear after the first day I wasn’t going to give this one up.  We still haven’t agreed on a name, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have one.  I will call her Prim, and my husband will refuse to do so because he doesn’t like it.  He’s called my 16 year old Pug by the wrong name his whole life and it hasn’t bothered him, so I don’t expect being called by two different names will bother Prim either.  I’m the one she interacts with 90% of the time, so Prim is the name she will learn to respond to.  She has some real trust issues, which is to be expected with a dog rescued from a puppy mill, but every day I see improvement and I have high hopes.  She was trying hard to get Midget to play with her yesterday and just this morning I found her on Grace’s bed.  Clearly she’s making herself at home.

Classy? Gizmo? Bitsy? http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/classy-gizmo-bitsy/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/classy-gizmo-bitsy/#comments Wed, 03 Apr 2013 17:06:26 +0000 Gina http://gracenfriends.com/?p=703 This is my new foster dog Classy, or my new dog Gizmo or Bitsy or whatever name we finally agree on.  Personally, I like the name Prim, but my husband doesn’t and we’ll have to agree on whatever we end up calling her, if we keep her.  Having spent her whole life in a cage, she’s a little scared of people, but making progress.  It’s so sad to see her natural instinct to like people, curbed by fear and mistrust.  At only 6 pounds, when her tail wags, her whole body wags, and she gets so excited when you talk to her.  Sadly though, she pulls back when you reach to pet her.  From the minute we heard about this batch of Shih-tzus, we knew we would get another foster and possibly a new addition to our doggy clan.  Daily it’s looking more and more like she’s a keeper.

Can Dogs and Cats get West Nile Virus? http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/can-dogs-and-cats-get-west-nile-virus/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/can-dogs-and-cats-get-west-nile-virus/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 19:46:26 +0000 Gina http://forprofitblogs.com/grace/?p=146 As a matter of fact, they can, but for most of our four legged friends, West Nile Virus is not a serious issue.  For horses, it is dangerous, and the FDA has recently approved a vaccination for them, but if your dog or cat is bitten by a mosquito, they are in far more danger of developing heartworm disease than the West Nile Virus.  I cannot stress enough the importance of protecting your pets with annual exams and monthly heartworm prevention.  West Nile Virus is a serious matter and we should all use every method available to protect ourselves.  For our four legged friends, Heartworm Disease is just as dangerous, and they deserve protection as well.  If you have not done so already, please take your cat or dog for a heartworm test and get them on preventive medicine.  They give us unconditional love.  They deserve our protection.

Flea and Tick Medication http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/flea-and-tick-medication/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/04/flea-and-tick-medication/#comments Mon, 01 Apr 2013 14:00:24 +0000 Gina http://gracenfriends.com/?p=373 It’s that time of year again. and once mroe I have let myself run out of flea and tick prevention for my little dogs.  I have to keep them all on the same schedule for things like this, or I’ll end up leaving someone out, so everyone will be a few days late this month.  Fortunately 800PetMeds is fast, so I can order today and have the treatments before the end of the week.  I haven’t seen a tick in my yard in years, and the yard spray I use for mosquitoes also kills fleas and ticks. so going a few days beyond a month isn’t really a big deal, but that’s not the case for everyone.  My mother, for instance, lives in the country, and her maltese Auggie loves to get out of the yard and roam around in the fields.  She swears if she goes even one day beyond the recommend 30 days with his treatment, he ends up with fleas, and ticks are much more of a problem in rural areas.  Since fleas and ticks can lead to much bigger problems, I can’t stress enough the need for monthly prevention, with whatever method works best for your dog.

A New Home for My Foster http://gracenfriends.com/2013/03/a-new-home-for-my-foster-2/ http://gracenfriends.com/2013/03/a-new-home-for-my-foster-2/#comments Wed, 20 Mar 2013 00:54:29 +0000 Gina http://gracenfriends.com/?p=693 After 3 1/2 months in foster care, 2 1/2 with me, my boy Odie finally found a forever home.  At 10 years old, with heartworm disease, I wasn’t sure anyone would ever give him a change, but a wonderful lady with two other senior dogs decided she had to have him.  And that’s how she put it, that he needed to come live with her.  When I delivered him, she took him into her arms and told him she’d missed him.  It made me very happy and reminded me once more why I do this.  She has already sent me a picture and an e-mail saying he seems to know he’s home.  As much as I will miss my boy, I know he is where he belongs.
