Changing Dog Food

Will changing the brand of dog food you use make your dog sick? When I used to raise Pugs people who bought puppies from me would ask what kind of food they’d been eating, so they could feed them the same thing. I also hear people who are adopting dogs ask what they’ve been eating, for the same reason. The thing is, rescue groups and shelters operate on donations, and that includes dog and cat food. When money is donated, of course they choose the brand, but no shelter or rescue group is going to turn down donated food, no matter the brand. I have seen carts full of donated food at rescue events, and no one ever turns down a donation because it’s ”the cheap stuff,” or store brand, or because the first ingredient isn’t chicken or beef. The reality is animals adjust, and changing their food may cause loose stools. but that usually passes in a few days. Do I think sticking with one brand of good quality food is important? Sure I do. I also think dry dog food is better than canned, but that’s just my opinion. What I know is, regular meals and love matter more to a pet than what brand of food it’s eating, or if you change foods periodically because you want to try something that’s on sale. I’ve never seen a dog or cat starve itself in protest of a change and I can’t image it will happen anytime soon. People do stupid stuff like that. Animals have better sense.
